Clear dog guards provide a new take on traditional car dog guards. For dog owners, breeders and exhibitors, Cruft’s at the NEC Birmingham is always a huge attraction. This year Boot Buddy Ltd were once again demonstrating their full range of car protection products in a show car. We would like to say a Big Thank You to Listers Land Rover, who provided a superb Range Rover Evoque sport as our show car this year. As you can see from the images below it certainly was a stunning car to display our dog guard in, and the decals really drew large numbers of visitors to the stand.

Thanks to Listers Group, we were able to measure and custom make our clear dog guard for both the three door and five door Evoque models. In most vehicles dog guard dimensions are pretty standard in both the three and five door versions, but not in this case. When making the templates pre production, there was around 40mm difference in the seat to roof line height between the two dog guards. Fortunately this posed little problem as every dog guard we make is custom made for each car.

When rear drivers view is limited either by the size of the rear window, or if tinted glass is in use, a totally clear dog guard does not reduce further the drivers rear view.

Clear dog guards V Traditional dog guard.

Cars have always been used to transport dogs, and fitting dog guards has become the norm for many dog owners. Try typing “dog guards” into any search engine, and expect to see thousands of results being returned. For example;

However many results you find, until recently all dog guards for cars basically fell into just two categories. Tubular steel, and wire mesh, or a combination of both.

There are of course, many so called “universal fit” guards on the market, and while these do fill a need, there are often hidden pitfalls with them. With nearly 1000 different makes and models of cars, each having a different internal shape and size, it’s little surprise that these universal guards exist. After all, which manufacturer wants to make and stock and supply a thousand different dog guards?

Then there are the vehicle specific dog guards, which do not have to compromise on fitting the exact size of each car. However these do tend to be more expensive, due to the higher cost of manufacture, and stocking costs.

New types of clear dog guards.

In the last 40-50 years there has been little innovation in the products supplied to keep pet dogs safely in the vehicles boot area. More recent developments by major car manufacturers has led to the addition of a flexible mesh type screen that can be raised or lowered behind the rear seats. These often affix to slots in the roof lining of the various cars.

Recently it has become increasingly apparent that these in built flexible screens, have become less user friendly with each new model. For example, the original mesh pull up screens had fairly large gaps, so the driver looking in the rear view mirror could see out of the rear window. However recent so called improvements, have made matters worse, by decreasing the size of the gaps in these screens. So much so that rear view is significantly reduced, especially when reversing at night.

Then there is the security aspect, because dogs can chew their way through such screens if they have a mind to. So it’s back to those steel dog guards once again.

Recently a totally new concept in dog guards for cars was introduced. For the first time in the history of car dog guards, a distinct new product has been brought into the crowded market place.

Originally shown at a trade show, the worlds first clear dog guard was an immediate hit, with dog owners and pet shops keen on finding out more about this new design. Many were keen to swap over from their traditional wire mesh or tubular steel dog guard, to the much friendlier clear dog guard now on show.

However such was the interest, that the product had to be withdrawn from the website as demand outstripped availability. So it was about six months later at the UK’s largest dog show, Crufts at the NEC Birmingham, that the new clear guards made their official debut.

Since those early days dog guard designs have become more and more sophisticated, and rather than one guard being used for several vehicles, we now individually make for each car. That makes much more work for us, but results in much better fitting clear dog guards for our buyers.

Unsolicited customer testimonials come in every week, and we know we are on to something that will just keep growing and growing for years to come. Hardly a week goes by without us adding new cars to our range, and even car dealerships are taking an interest in our products.

As for our dog guard prices, they are not at the cheap end of the market, being priced at £79.99 when VAT is added. But go to any main car dealership and in the vast majority of cases their own vehicle specific dog guards start at £100, with some costing hundreds of pounds.
